Race Report - Silverstone June 16th 2001
The Circuit
Centrally located near Northampton, Silverstone is the current home of the British Grand Prix. As well as the GP circuit, there other layouts, and we were using the shortest National circuit. What was very pleasant though was the opportunity to use the pit garages. Even with 6 cars to a garage there was plenty of room !
Practice
To rain or not to rain, that was the question. I waited until the last minute before I went to the collecting area on dry tyres. We went out and after 2 laps it started to rain. Once the rain had started, the lap times were not going to fall, though quite a number of my competitors managed to fall off. Broster was in the gravel, Ian White gracefully pirouetted in front of me at Woodcote, while Patrick Pearce brought the session to an end by repeating Patricks move, and finishing off by hitting the pit wall, fortunately not causing to much damage. As for me I too felt the rear break away at Woodcote, but managed to put the right amount of opposite lock to recover control of the car. Sadly, this bend was to feature in events later that day.
Race
The heavy showers returned, and I went to the collecting area on wet tyres. The race before the Porsche classic was a round of the Mini Se7en championship, and at about 3/4 distance the race was red flagged following a serious accident at Woodcote. The medical staff attended, but tragically one driver died at the scene. Sensibly, due to most of the medical staff accompanying another driver to the hospital, the meeting was abandoned.
